It’s a challenge trying to drive awareness and use of ACH payments when everyone is using different terminology. To help, NACHA developed consistent terminology to ensure everyone is speaking the same language - Direct Payment via ACH.

Through data and information gathered from research and focus groups made up of your peers, NACHA determined that Direct Payment was the most accepted terminology for all audiences.

The Language

The ACH Network is a safe, secure, electronic network for direct consumer, business, and government payments.

The Terminology

“Direct Payment” is the use of funds for making a payment. Individuals or organizations can send or receive a Direct Payment as an ACH credit or debit.

The Phrasing

The ACH Network is the vehicle for direct account-to-account electronic transactions, and “via ACH” is the differentiating phrase that links ACH payments back to the Network.
